The Christian McCaffrey injury situation remains a concern for the San Francisco 49ers, and the latest update brings more bad news. After their 36-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on the star running back. McCaffrey, who has been on injured reserve and hasn’t played this season, will not have his practice window opened this week.

This confirms that McCaffrey will miss the team’s crucial Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and his return to the field is still uncertain. McCaffrey initially suffered a calf strain in training camp, causing him to miss the preseason. While there was hope he’d be ready for Week 1, he was ruled out just before the opener against the New York Jets. Ahead of Week 2, the team placed him on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least a month.

Christian McCaffrey injury update: Ramp up to begin ahead of Week 5

A month has passed, and although McCaffrey is eligible to return to practice, he’s not ready yet. His injury has worsened, and he’s now dealing with Achilles tendinitis in both legs. He even traveled to Germany to consult a specialist as the 49ers explore all options to get him back on the field. However, his practice window won’t open until at least Week 8.

McCaffrey is coming off an outstanding 2023 season, where he earned Offensive Player of the Year honors, leading the league in touches (339), yards from scrimmage (2,023), and total touchdowns (21). His absence has been felt, as the 49ers are 3-3 without him. Though Jordan Mason leads the NFL in rushing yards (609) and attempts (114), he also sustained an injury in Week 6, leaving his status for Week 7 uncertain. The 49ers hope to have McCaffrey back by Week 9 or 10.
