With Logan Mailloux, Lane Hutson, and David Reinbacher vying for spots in the Canadiens’ lineup, significant changes seem inevitable.
As the new season approaches, it will become increasingly challenging for Justin Barron to secure a role in the team’s defense.
Similar to Jordan Harris, who was traded for Patrik Laine, Barron could be sent down to the Laval Rocket by the end of training camp. However, since he has a one-way contract, he would need to clear waivers.
According to HabsolumentFan, it’s highly probable that GM Kent Hughes will look to trade Barron rather than risk losing him for nothing, possibly getting assistance from last season’s Stanley Cup finalists.

Justin Barron traded to the Edmonton Oilers?
Edmonton journalist Bob Stauffer suggests that the Oilers will likely aim to fill the gaps left by Cody Ceci and Philip Broberg’s departures, with new GM Stan Bowman reportedly seeking a right-handed defenseman.
Great to see the @EdmontonOilers key Management people and HC Kris Knoblauch all in Penticton.
Fully expect the Oilers to be in the market for a 2nd pairing RD…at some point…
Preferably with a little term left…— Bob Stauffer (@Bob_Stauffer) September 15, 2024
It’s expected that the Oilers will target a second-pairing right-handed defenseman, ideally one with a multi-year contract.
Although there haven’t been any trade rumors involving the Canadiens and Oilers yet, adding Justin Barron to Edmonton’s defense could make sense, as the team lacks depth on the right side, aside from Evan Bouchard.
