A well-traveled pitcher who had a stint with the Phillies is looking to secure a spot on the Red Sox’s roster in 2025 as his MLB career nears its final stages.
Although spring training is in full swing, teams continue to make roster moves.
Veteran left-hander signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Moore, who debuted with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011, has played for eight major league organizations over his 13-year career, including a stop with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Matt Moore had one of his worst seasons with Phillies in 2021

After spending the 2020 season in Japan, Matt Moore signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Phillies ahead of the 2021 season. However, his time in Philadelphia turned out to be one of the worst stretches of his career.
The left-hander posted a 2-4 record with a 6.29 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, both the second-worst marks of his career. Used as a swingman, Moore made 13 starts and 11 relief appearances. As a starter, he struggled to a 1-4 record with a 6.55 ERA and 1.70 WHIP across 56 1/3 innings. Out of the bullpen, he wasn’t much better, recording a 5.40 ERA over 16 2/3 innings.
It was a forgettable stint in Philadelphia, but fortunately for the Phillies, they hadn’t made a long-term financial commitment to him, avoiding a situation like Taijuan Walker’s costly contract.
Moore’s struggles with the Phillies marked his worst season since 2018, when he recorded a 6.79 ERA over 102 innings with the Texas Rangers. However, he bounced back in 2022, delivering an impressive 1.95 ERA over 74 innings for Texas.

In 2023, he spent most of the year with the Los Angeles Angels, posting a 2.66 ERA in 41 appearances before being claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Guardians in August. After making five appearances for Cleveland, the Miami Marlins picked him up off waivers, where he pitched four more times.
Moore returned to the Angels in 2024 but struggled, finishing with a 5.03 ERA across 48 1/3 innings.
Now 35, the former 2013 All-Star, who owns a career 4.39 ERA and 1.39 WHIP, will compete for a spot in the Red Sox bullpen during the remainder of spring training.
