The Mets are signing infielder to a minor league contract, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. He became a free agent after being designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier this week following Giancarlo Stanton’s return from the injured list. He will report to Triple-A Syracuse.

Now 31, Reyes has spent parts of seven MLB seasons with multiple organizations. This marks his second straight year with the Mets; he was acquired from the Red Sox in May 2024. Reyes briefly appeared on the Mets’ major league roster last season, scoring a run as a pinch runner in his only game before being designated for assignment and sent to the minors.

In addition to his time with the Mets, Reyes has played in the Yankees, Red Sox, Brewers, and Pirates systems. He debuted with Pittsburgh in 2018, impressing initially with a .293/.349/.483 slash line over 18 games, but struggled the following season. He missed all of 2020 due to a PED suspension and later joined the Brewers, hitting .258/.330/.344 (84 wRC+) over two seasons in Milwaukee.

Reyes signed with the Red Sox ahead of 2023 and enjoyed his best major league season, batting .287/.339/.377 over 64 games and posting a career-best 11.4% strikeout rate. However, his production has dropped significantly since then, hitting just .187/.237/.220 (26 wRC+) with a 29.6% strikeout rate across 98 plate appearances between the Red Sox and Yankees over the last two years.

Although Reyes isn’t expected to contribute much offensively, his speed and defensive versatility make him a serviceable bench piece.

With current Mets injuries to Nick Madrigal and Mark Vientos and top prospects Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio occupying bench roles, Reyes could be a depth option should more injuries arise or if younger players are sent down for regular playing time. He’ll compete with other non-roster options like Donovan Walton and David Villar for a potential call-up.
