The Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that they have added former Miami Dolphins running back to their practice squad, while releasing rookie kicker Spencer Shrader in a corresponding move.
Ahmed, originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers, is a 5’11”, 197-pound back best known for his time with the Dolphins from 2020 to 2023. He briefly spent time on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad earlier this year.
Over his 38 career games (including 4 starts), Ahmed has totaled 593 rushing yards on 163 carries (averaging 3.6 yards per carry) and scored 5 rushing touchdowns.
Colts fans might speculate that Ahmed’s signing could be linked to the possibility of star running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) missing his third straight game. Taylor did not practice on Wednesday, though he remains hopeful for a quick return.

Last week, the Colts’ run game struggled, partly due to injuries to starting quarterback Anthony Richardson and two key offensive linemen. Trey Sermon managed just 1.6 yards per carry on 18 attempts, while excluding Tyler Goodson’s 33-yard run, he averaged only 2.57 yards on his remaining 7 carries.
Ahmed could provide a change of pace if activated, and given his experience with Miami’s offense, he may bring some familiarity ahead of the Colts’ upcoming game against the Dolphins. This signing may also be a strategic move by Indianapolis as they prepare to face Ahmed’s former team.
