The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran catcher, according to FanSided. McCann, who most recently played for the Baltimore Orioles, has been a well-traveled player throughout his career.
With over 3,000 career at-bats, McCann has compiled a .241 batting average along with 92 home runs and 373 RBIs. His best season came in 2019 when he earned an All-Star selection while playing for the Chicago White Sox. He has also spent time with the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets.
Last season, McCann appeared in 65 games for the Orioles, hitting eight home runs with 31 RBIs and adding a stolen base.
With Opening Day set for March 27, McCann will have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot. According to ESPN, he will earn $1 million if he makes the big league club.
Braves are needing depth at catcher
The Atlanta Braves are addressing their catching depth amid injury concerns, as Sean Murphy is sidelined with a cracked rib. To help fill the gap, the team has signed veteran catcher James McCann to a minor league deal.

For now, Chadwick Tromp is expected to handle starting duties behind the plate. With spring training winding down and Opening Day approaching—set for March 27 for most teams—the Braves are looking to solidify their roster.
Atlanta is aiming for a strong 2025 season after winning 89 games last year and securing the final NL playoff spot. However, their postseason run was short-lived, as they were swept by the Padres in the Wild Card round. This year, they’ll need to keep pace with the New York Mets, who bolstered their roster with the addition of Juan Soto after reaching the NLCS in 2024.
The Braves have one of their final spring training games against the Yankees on Wednesday before opening the regular season against the Padres on March 27.
