The Seattle Mariners kick off their 2025 regular season on Thursday against the Athletics. There is a sense of optimism surrounding the team, as they are considered strong contenders for the American League West title, largely due to their impressive pitching staff.
Seattle finished the previous season with an 85-77 record, falling short of the playoffs. This followed an 88-74 finish in 2023, which also wasn’t enough to secure a postseason spot. As a result, the Mariners enter 2025 eager to take the next step.
With Opening Day upon them, the Mariners are continuing to bolster their pitching depth. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, they have re-signed Drew Pomeranz to a minor-league deal.

Pomeranz had initially signed with Seattle during the offseason but was released on Sunday at his own request after failing to make the major-league roster. However, after spending a few days as a free agent, the former All-Star has opted to return to the Mariners on another minor-league contract.
Adding a veteran like Pomeranz for depth carries little downside for Seattle.
Though the 36-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022, he brings 11 years of big-league experience. Across 289 career appearances with the Rockies, Athletics, Red Sox, Giants, Brewers, and Padres, he has compiled a 48-58 record with a 3.89 ERA.
It remains to be seen whether Pomeranz can perform well enough to earn a spot on Seattleās roster at some point this season.
