The Giants have re-signed catcher to a minor league contract, the team announced. Porter had previously been designated for assignment when San Francisco promoted Sergio Alcántara to address a string of infield injuries. After clearing waivers and declining an outright assignment, Porter chose to re-sign under a new deal.
Porter, who turns 30 later this week, originally joined the Giants on a minor league contract during the offseason. He has spent most of the year with Triple-A Sacramento but was briefly called up in June when Patrick Bailey was sidelined with a neck strain. He returned to the minors once Bailey was healthy, though he remained on the 40-man roster until last week’s designation.
In his brief stint with the Giants, Porter went 1-for-7 with a walk over four games — his first major league action since appearing in 11 games with the Royals two seasons ago. He has played parts of four seasons at Triple-A, where he’s posted a .249/.365/.396 line with 29 home runs in over 1,000 plate appearances. This season, he’s hitting .222/.354/.310 in 193 plate appearances with Sacramento.
Currently, Patrick Bailey and Andrew Knizner are the only healthy catchers on San Francisco’s 40-man roster, with Tom Murphy sidelined on the 60-day IL. For now, Bailey and Knizner will remain Bob Melvin’s catching tandem. Should either be injured, the Giants would need to add another catcher to the 40-man, with Porter likely being the top option. Both Sam Huff and Max Stassi are currently on the Triple-A injured list.
