While much of the criticism from fans focused on the Angels’ rotation, the team’s catching situation was also a clear weakness in 2025. Logan O’Hoppe regressed significantly, leading some fans to call for a demotion to Triple-A at times.
Travis d’Arnaud provided steady work as the backup, but he hardly inspired confidence as a long-term starter—despite some metrics suggesting he might fare better with more playing time.
Angels might find perfect catcher solution by trading with St. Louis Cardinals
Still, if the Angels truly intend to compete for a playoff spot in 2026, they’ll likely need to look outside the organization for help behind the plate. Fortunately, one National League team may have exactly what they need.

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly open to trading one — or even several — of their catchers this offseason. With five catchers who must be protected on the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 Draft, the team is facing a significant roster crunch.
Ivan Herrera, who spent much of 2025 as the Cardinals’ designated hitter and was arguably their best offensive performer, stands out as the most appealing trade target. With multiple years of team control remaining, Herrera could be a strong long-term fit in Anaheim. Swapping a young arm like Caden Dana or George Klassen for him would be a major win for GM Perry Minasian as he looks to secure his position.
Behind Herrera, the Cardinals also have Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo — both younger, serviceable options who showed flashes of potential in 2025. Each could eventually develop into a quality starter with regular playing time.

However, given that Logan O’Hoppe and Travis d’Arnaud are already on the Angels’ roster, any new addition would likely be splitting time with them. Unless the Angels are ready to give Pages or Pozo a real shot at becoming their primary catcher, it may make more sense to pursue a different option.
In all likelihood, the Angels will roll with O’Hoppe and d’Arnaud again in 2026. With Perry Minasian and Arte Moreno appearing more concerned with fixing the pitching staff, the catching situation could be pushed to the back burner. But if they do decide to upgrade, Ivan Herrera represents one of the best options available on the trade market.
