In an unexpected effort to bolster their struggling starting rotation, the New York Yankees are reportedly considering signing a recently retired pitcher who has been coaching his son’s Little League team.
At the beginning of the season, the Yankees were expected to have one of the strongest starting rotations in baseball, led by reigning American League Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. The staff also included multi-time All-Stars Carlos Rodon and Marcus Stroman, along with Nestor Cortes and promising young talent Luis Gil.

Initially, the rotation performed well despite Cole’s absence. However, in the last month, the starting pitchers have significantly declined, with Stroman and Cortes experiencing the most notable drop in performance. This led the Yankees to explore trades for pitchers like Garrett Crochet and Jack Flaherty before last month’s trade deadline.
Unfortunately, they were unable to secure a significant pitching addition, and with no clear solutions within their minor league system, the organization is now reportedly considering an unconventional approach to strengthen their rotation for the remainder of the season.
New York Yankees interested in signing Rich Hill
Free-agent pitcher Rich Hill will be showcasing his skills for interested teams on Friday, August 9, at 10 a.m. at Champion Physical Therapy and Performance in Waltham, Mass., according to Fansided MLB insider Robert Murray. Hill, 44, has attracted interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, among others. Recent data from his throwing sessions have been positive, indicating his curveball remains a strong pitch.
Rich Hill’s career stats include a 90-73 record, a 4.01 ERA, a 1.259 WHIP, 1,423 strikeouts, 540 walks, and 1,405.1 innings pitched.
The 19-year MLB veteran, who has not played this season and was thought to be retired, recently hinted at a possible return. He pitched half a season for the Yankees in 2014 and played for 11 other teams throughout his career. Hill’s best season was in 2016, when he achieved a 12-5 record with a 2.12 ERA.
