The Philadelphia Phillies made a significant move on Saturday, acquiring former All-Star closer Carlos Estevez from the Los Angeles Angels. This trade comes at a high cost but promises substantial benefits for the Phillies.
Estevez, considered one of the top closers available, fills a critical gap in the Phillies’ bullpen. In exchange, the Phillies sent two rising pitching prospects, George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri, to the Angels. Initially ranked near the bottom of the Phillies’ top 20 prospects list, Klassen and Aldegheri have quickly ascended to No. 5 and No. 7, respectively, now placing them among the Angels’ top 10 prospects.

Although the price may seem steep, Klassen and Aldegheri are not expected to reach the majors before 2026. On the other hand, Estevez is set to play a crucial role for the Phillies immediately.

The Phillies bullpen, ranking second in WAR (5.0) and strikeouts per nine innings (10.30), boasts several strong options, including Orion Kerkering, Jose Alvarado, and All-Stars Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman. However, none have firmly established themselves as the closer, a role Estevez is poised to take over.
Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski hinted at Estevez’s new role, suggesting that manager Rob Thomson would likely use him in “a lot of ninth innings.”
Estevez, 31, has recorded 20 saves in 23 opportunities this season, with a 2.38 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 32 strikeouts, and only five walks over 34 innings. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 18 appearances, striking out 15 and walking just three over 18.1 innings, while opponents have managed a mere .069/.115/.069 slash line against him.
Ideally, the trade will benefit both teams. The Angels, struggling in the AL West, gain two promising arms for the future, while the Phillies secure a proven closer to boost their World Series hopes. Regardless of the outcome, the move is a strategic fit for the Phillies.
