New York Mets slugger is set to hit free agency and is expected to secure a significant contract, though it may not reach the heights he initially hoped for.

Heading into the offseason, Alonso reportedly aimed for a deal close to $200 million. However, recent rumors suggest he might settle for a shorter-term contract worth around $100 million instead of the massive deal he envisioned.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic recently projected Alonso to sign a three-year, $93.3 million contract.

“Here’s a prediction for Alonso’s contract if the Mets accept Boras’ proposal for a three-year deal with opt-outs, as confirmed by The Athletic’s Will Sammon: Three years, $93.3 million, with deferrals reducing the deal’s present-day value,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote. “Why $93.3 million? Because a $31.1 million average annual value would set a record for a first baseman, surpassing Miguel Cabrera’s $31 million AAV from his eight-year, $248 million extension with the Detroit Tigers (2016-23, ages 33 to 40).”

Teams reportedly interested in Alonso include the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, the Mets, and others.

Ultimately, the Mets remain the most likely destination for Alonso. The primary question now is the contract’s duration and value. A deal around $93.3 million would make sense, especially if it sets a new AAV record for a first baseman.
