While many fans are eager for the Cincinnati Reds to acquire an outfielder during this week’s MLB Winter Meetings, securing a backup catcher may be a more urgent priority. Currently, Tyler Stephenson is the only catcher on the Reds’ 40-man roster, and the team lacks a reliable backup in their minor league system. However, help could be on the horizon.
According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, the Reds are exploring the possibility of signing free-agent catcher James McCann. The former All-Star has spent the past two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, serving as a backup to their rising star Adley Rutschman.
Reds’ reportedly targeting former All-Star James McCann as Tyler Stephenson’s backup
Veteran catcher James McCann, with 11 years of major league experience, has caught the attention of the Reds as they look to upgrade their catching depth. Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall previously indicated his intent to find a backup catcher capable of stepping into a starting role if necessary. McCann last played more than 100 games in a season back in 2021 with the New York Mets.

Earlier this offseason, the Reds declined Luke Maile’s 2025 club option, parting ways with a player known for his strong rapport with the pitching staff and leadership in the clubhouse despite underwhelming offensive numbers. If the Reds miss out on McCann, they may consider re-signing Maile on a more affordable deal.
Should McCann sign elsewhere, the Reds have other options in free agency. Notable names include Yasmani Grandal, a former Reds prospect and one of the best hitting catchers still available, former All-Star Elias Díaz, and two-time Gold Glove winner Tucker Barnhart.
The Reds are keen to avoid repeating their 2022 catching struggles, a season in which Tyler Stephenson was limited to 50 games and six different catchers were used. While Alex Jackson remains a minor-league option, securing a veteran like McCann or another experienced catcher will be a priority heading into the 2025 season.
