The Cincinnati Reds may have to wait a bit longer for His return to the mound.
He was scratched from his scheduled rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday after experiencing renewed soreness in his right groin, according to Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now.
Per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, He has since undergone an MRI.
The 25-year-old has been on the injured list since June 4 due to a Grade 1 right groin strain and previously received an epidural for back discomfort. Before landing on the IL, Greene was one of MLB’s top performers, posting a 2.72 ERA with 73 strikeouts over 59.2 innings in 11 starts.
While Greene told Goldsmith he considers himself day-to-day, the Reds are awaiting MRI results to determine the next steps.
Hunter Greene Has Dealt With Numerous Injuries
Hunter Greene, known for his triple-digit fastball, took a major leap forward in 2024. The hard-throwing right-hander posted a career-best 2.75 ERA over 26 starts, striking out 169 batters across 150.1 innings. His breakout season earned him his first All-Star selection and an eighth-place finish in the National League Cy Young race.

However, Greene also missed over a month due to right elbow soreness.
Hopes were high that he’d continue building on that success this year, but injuries have gotten in the way. He was sidelined for 13 games from May 8–23 with a right groin strain.
After returning for three starts, Greene was placed back on the injured list following a June 3 outing against the Brewers, in which he exited after five innings with renewed groin discomfort.
He had been slated to pitch Tuesday for Triple-A Louisville, which could have set him up to return Sunday against the Rockies—the Reds’ final game before the All-Star break. Now, the team must hope this latest setback proves to be minor.
How Have the Reds Fared this Season?
The Cincinnati Reds began their three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Monday with a 46-44 record, trailing the NL Central lead by 8.0 games.
In Hunter Greene’s absence, left-hander Andrew Abbott has emerged as a key contributor to the rotation, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.15 ERA over 15 starts. Nick Lodolo has also been solid, carrying a 3.58 ERA.
According to NBC 5 Cincinnati’s Charlie Clifford, manager Terry Francona said Greene’s MRI was done “out of an abundance of caution,” emphasizing there’s no need to rush the talented right-hander back.
Greene, who was selected second overall in the 2017 MLB Draft, signed a six-year, \$53 million extension in 2023.
