The Cincinnati Reds have positioned themselves as buyers at the MLB trade deadline, but their top target may be sidelined. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez was hit on the hand by a 96 mph fastball from Tigers reliever Will Vest during Monday’s game. Suárez left the game with the training staff, and manager Torey Lovullo has listed him as day-to-day.

This injury comes at a tough time for the Diamondbacks, who have been actively shopping Suárez ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. The two-time All-Star has been one of the most talked-about trade chips, but a stint on the injured list could bring all trade talks to a halt.

The Reds are among several teams reportedly interested in acquiring Suárez. Ironically, the Tigers—Monday’s opponent—are also said to be pursuing him. Other teams linked to Suárez include the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, and Seattle Mariners.

Eugenio Suárez had been putting together an All-Star caliber season with the Diamondbacks, but Arizona recently shifted into seller mode. General Manager Mike Hazen started unloading players—Josh Naylor was dealt just last week—and was aiming to get a strong return for Suárez.

However, Suárez’s trade value may have taken a hit after he was hit on the hand by a pitch and forced to leave Monday’s game. Some fans may recall he was also hit on the hand during the All-Star Game earlier this month, raising further concern.

Now, with multiple teams reportedly engaged in a bidding war for Suárez, his status is suddenly in question. If X-rays reveal a fracture or he’s expected to miss time, trade talks could stall—and the Reds, who were interested in reuniting with their former third baseman, may move on.

Should Suárez be sidelined, Cincinnati has backup options. During Sunday Night Baseball, ESPN’s Buster Olney mentioned that the Reds are eyeing Tampa Bay’s Yandy Díaz. Other bats potentially available ahead of Thursday’s deadline include outfielders Ramón Laureano and Alex Call.
