Chargers Making All The Right Moves Meet With Star TE Prospect

The Los Angeles Chargers have struggled to replace Antonio Gates at the tight end position for several years. Although the Hall of Famer wasn’t particularly productive in his final seasons, the team has been unable to find a stable solution since then.

Hunter Henry had a decent five-year run with the Chargers, but injuries ultimately led to his departure. Last offseason, Los Angeles signed Will Dissly to a three-year deal, but despite solid numbers, his impact fell short of expectations.

With the tight end class in the 2024 draft being incredibly deep, many expected the Chargers to address the position, but they recently signed Tyler Conklin from the New York Jets. Conklin has posted stronger career numbers than Dissly, despite playing with worse quarterback play. However, a recent announcement from a draft prospect suggests the Chargers may still draft a tight end.

Colston Loveland's Draft Profile | Michigan, TE Scouting Report

At Michigan’s Pro Day on March 21, tight end Colston Loveland revealed he has a meeting with the Chargers scheduled for Tuesday, March 25. Loveland, a National Champion, has been linked to Los Angeles by several reputable analysts recently, and the interest seems mutual.

He played under Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh just a year ago, and Harbaugh has a history of bringing Michigan players to Southern California.

Loveland could provide a much-needed boost to the Chargers’ inconsistent passing game, while Dissly focuses on blocking duties. Last season, Loveland, a Second Team All-American, recorded nearly 600 yards and five touchdowns in just ten games.

While those stats might not seem exceptional, they are impressive considering Michigan had one of the worst passing offenses in college football.

Although the Chargers’ tight end depth is no longer a pressing issue, both Conklin and Dissly have relatively affordable contracts. This gives Los Angeles the flexibility to draft a player like Loveland, who could ultimately prove to be a far better option than either Conklin or Dissly.
