The St. Louis Cardinals and Nolan Arenado had plenty of drama before the 2025 season even began. The team made a serious effort to trade the eight-time All-Star, but those attempts ultimately fell through.
Arenado, who holds a no-trade clause, was the key reason talks stalled. Although the Cardinals had a deal lined up with the Houston Astros, he chose to exercise his clause and remain in St. Louis.

Under contract with the Cardinals through 2027, Arenado is set to return for now. Still, with the organization shifting its focus toward younger talent, the possibility of another trade attempt in a future offseason remains very real.
Cardinals urged to trade Nolan Arenado to a contending club
The Cardinals, once a perennial contender, have seen a downturn in recent years. Since shifting focus toward developing their younger talent, the team hasn’t reached the postseason since 2022.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy, this offseason could be the right time to trade Nolan Arenado—ideally to a contender.

“The Cardinals explored trading Arenado over the past year. He still has a no-trade clause and money left on his contract, but he’s been an outstanding presence in St. Louis. With the team far from contention, giving him a shot at a championship late in his career while opening up third base for a younger player would make sense.”
One possible fit could be the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arenado, a Southern California native, was open to waiving his no-trade clause for them in 2024.
