The New York Yankees might consider making several trades to enhance their roster before the July 30 trade deadline, with a potential blockbuster move being one of the options.

Jon Heyman from the New York Post reports that the Yankees have shown interest in Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., though the level of interest remains unclear. Prior to the 2023 season, the Marlins transitioned Chisholm from second base to center field. Heyman suggests that if Chisholm were to join the Yankees, he would likely return to the infield.

Chisholm has over two years of team control remaining before becoming a free agent and is earning $2.625 million this season. Due to his age (26), contract status, and potential, the Yankees would need to present a substantial offer to acquire him.

Once considered one of baseball’s top emerging infielders, Chisholm’s performance has been inconsistent. In 2022, he was selected for the All-Star game after hitting .254/.324/.535 in his first 60 games. However, his breakout season was cut short by a stress fracture in his back. Over the past two seasons, he has posted a .253/.314/.436 line with 31 home runs in 755 plate appearances, equating to a 102 OPS+.

In 2024, Chisholm is having a solid season, hitting .255/.324/.419 with 12 home runs and a 104 OPS+ in 77 plate appearances, along with 18 stolen bases.

With Anthony Volpe secured at shortstop, the Yankees might consider placing Chisholm at second base to replace the struggling Gleyber Torres or at third base for the first time to relieve the underperforming DJ LeMahieu.

Throughout his career, Chisholm has played 183 games in center field, 164 games at second base, and 46 games at shortstop.
