The Cincinnati Reds have re-signed catcher Andy Yerzy, who previously spent time in their organization. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he played in 17 minor league games with the Reds’ farm system in 2023. However, if you don’t remember him, that’s understandable, as his time with the team was limited.

After losing significant catching depth at the Double-A, Triple-A, and MLB levels to free agency following the 2024 season, the Reds have been working to rebuild.

Yerzy is the latest addition, joining on a minor league deal for 2025. He follows other recent signings, including Austin Wynns and Will Banfield. The Reds had also signed Alex Jackson earlier but traded him to the Yankees in December in exchange for Jose Trevino.

During his 2023 stint with the Reds, Yerzy spent much of the season on the development list with Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville, where players can practice and travel with the team but aren’t eligible to play in games.

Though healthy throughout the year, he appeared in only 17 games, hitting .235/.371/.529 before being released in mid-August. In 2024, he joined the Milwaukee Brewers organization, serving as a backup catcher in Double-A, playing 22 games, and spending additional time on the development list before making a single appearance with Triple-A Nashville late in the season.

For 2025, Yerzy seems likely to take on a similar role with the Reds as a third-string catcher at the Double-A or Triple-A level. While he may not see much playing time, his presence adds depth and provides insurance in case injuries necessitate roster adjustments within the farm system.
