The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly continuing their aggressive efforts to trade veteran infielder Nolan Arenado this offseason. A trade seems increasingly likely, though it’s unclear where he might end up.

The Boston Red Sox are considered strong contenders to land Arenado, but they’re not the only team in the mix.

According to ESPN’s Eric Karabell, the Seattle Mariners could emerge as a surprise destination for the All-Star third baseman. “The Cardinals have made it clear they need to move on from Arenado to give Nolan Gorman the starting role at third base,” Karabell wrote.

“Rumors have linked teams like the Red Sox and Blue Jays, but there’s been little talk about the Mariners. So far, Seattle’s only significant move has been signing utility man Donovan Solano.

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado Could Be Alex Bregman Alternative For Two AL Contenders

“While Arenado may never regain his peak offensive form, the Cardinals appear desperate enough to eat a large portion of his contract, leaving Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto with an enticing opportunity. Arenado is coming off a disappointing season, but even a league-average hitter would provide a significant boost to this Mariners lineup.”

Seattle could indeed be an ideal fit for Arenado.

If the Cardinals are willing to cover a significant part of Arenado’s salary, the Mariners might offer a young pitcher like Emerson Hancock in return. Such a trade would give St. Louis a promising arm while allowing Seattle to add a much-needed bat to their lineup.

For the Mariners, acquiring Arenado could be a major step toward competing for the AL West title in 2025. While their pitching staff is already strong, the lineup struggles to produce runs, and Arenado’s presence would provide a significant upgrade.
