Melvin deserves the chance to stay despite a disappointing season.

Despite Bob Melvin’s challenging first year as the SF Giants’ manager, the disappointing season isn’t entirely on him. The front office, led by Farhan Zaidi, bears more responsibility for the team’s struggles to live up to expectations in recent years.

There is one person to blame for SF Giants struggles and it is not manager Bob Melvin

A season that began with high hopes and excitement has once again become one that the San Francisco Giants and their fans would rather forget. The team is on track for another losing record.

Last winter, the organization made a significant change by bringing in veteran manager Bob Melvin, hoping he could guide the team back to the playoffs. However, as we know, things haven’t turned out that way.

That being said, it’s important not to rush to blame Melvin for the team’s struggles. He’s not the root of the problem and has, overall, done a solid job. While there are always areas where he could have performed better, his game management has been an improvement compared to previous years.

Melvin’s résumé speaks for itself—he’s won Manager of the Year three times and led teams to the postseason on eight occasions. He deserves a fair chance, and firing him after one season would only highlight deeper organizational issues. Additionally, Melvin has shown strong support for his players, getting ejected from five games this season to defend them.

Perhaps most notably, Melvin’s leadership has kept the team from unraveling at key moments. When it seemed like the season was slipping away, the team rallied under his guidance and remained in the playoff hunt—something that hasn’t happened in recent years. Even now, they’re fighting to finish with a winning record despite facing their toughest road trip.

Now, to be fair, Melvin’s management wasn’t flawless. In August, his decision to stick with a struggling Camillo Doval hurt the team. But for the second straight year, his team has finished as one of the hottest in baseball, much like his Padres did at the end of 2023. No one expected the Giants to sweep through three playoff-bound teams on the road, but they did—a clear testament to Melvin’s influence.

The bulk of the blame should fall on President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi. Melvin is in his first year, but Zaidi has had six years to turn the team into a contender and has yet to do so. While several promising young players have emerged, Zaidi’s decisions have been questionable.

This became even clearer when it was reported that Buster Posey had to intervene to finalize the Matt Chapman extension, as Zaidi was unwilling to include a no-trade clause to close the deal—though some aspects of this report have been disputed.

In the coming days, the organization’s commitment to winning will be revealed. If they truly want to succeed, keeping Bob Melvin would be the smart move.
