The San Diego Padres came closest to challenging the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 postseason, as the Dodgers powered their way to a World Series championship.
However, “close” isn’t enough for a team with superstars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, and Dylan Cease on their roster and payroll.
One standout player for the Padres in 2024 was outfielder. After a lackluster 2023 season with a .689 OPS and a negative WAR, He rebounded in 2024 with an impressive .839 OPS and a 3.4 WAR. Now a free agent,He has become a key target for San Diego this offseason.
FanSided’s Nick Villano analyzed Profar’s free agency, predicting he would re-sign with the Padres. Spotrac estimates his next contract could be a two-year, $25 million deal.

“Profar has been through challenges, some of which were self-inflicted. He’s finally found a place he can call home, having already re-signed there after leaving once,” Villano wrote. “The Padres want him back, and Profar just wants a commitment. A deal seems likely, especially with the potential for a hometown discount.”
Bringing Profar back seems like an obvious move for the Padres. San Diego needs to bolster its roster significantly while staying within budget, and having Profar return as a 3.0-plus WAR player could be exactly what the team needs.
