Given their recent quarterback situation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have little incentive to trade any of their QB depth at this point in the season, especially players like Justin Fields or Russell Wilson.
However, if a team inquires, the Steelers would listen, according to former NFL head coach Rex Ryan. After Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another head injury in Week 2, Ryan said on ESPN’s “Get Up” that the Steelers could be in a position to receive offers for Wilson.

“I think he’d be the top guy to call, without a doubt,” Ryan stated in response to a question from Mike Greenberg about whether teams should approach Pittsburgh about Wilson.
Ryan acknowledged that trading Wilson might not sit well with everyone, but he outlined the potential cost. “You ask for a first-round pick,” he said.
Before anyone criticized the high asking price, Ryan justified it: “Why would Pittsburgh trade him unless it’s for a first-round pick? Their quarterback situation is solid, and everyone knows you need two QBs in this league.”
Ryan emphasized that the value of a starting quarterback is a first-rounder. He added, “The only way you make that move for Wilson is if you’ve lost your starter and believe you’re a playoff contender. Is there a team like that now? Maybe Miami.”
Pros & Cons of Steelers Trading Russell Wilson
Trading Wilson presents some clear advantages and disadvantages for the Steelers.
On the downside, Fields has yet to demonstrate his ability to lead Pittsburgh on a playoff run or prove he’s a better fit for the offense compared to Wilson, who has struggled with health issues since joining the team. Additionally, if Fields is the better option, the Steelers would still face the risk of relying on Kyle Allen as their starter if Wilson is traded, leaving them vulnerable if injuries occur.
However, from a positive perspective, trading Wilson could be a smart move for Pittsburgh. The team acquired Wilson at a bargain base salary of $1.21 million after few teams showed interest in him. Securing any draft picks, especially a first-rounder, in return for Wilson would be a major win for the Steelers. Moreover, trading Wilson would resolve any quarterback controversy and reduce the distractions of managing two capable starters.
Ultimately, while trading Wilson could benefit the Steelers’ future, its impact on their chances for the 2024 season is another matter entirely.
Steelers Sit Atop AFC North After First 2 Weeks of NFL Season
If the Steelers were having a rough season, trading for Wilson might be a logical move. However, since they currently hold the top spot in the AFC North and with the Ravens and Bengals both starting 0-2, it’s crucial for them to keep pushing forward.
A win at home against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3 could put the Steelers at 3-0 to begin the season.
Depending on how things go for Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, they could build a significant lead over their competitors.
For now, it makes sense for them to stick with their current quarterback. Generally, under head coach Mike Tomlin and the Rooney family’s leadership, the Steelers have shown a tendency to make thoughtful decisions.
