The Pittsburgh Steelers have several options at quarterback, including possibly replacing Russell Wilson with a younger player to either compete with or back up current starter Justin Fields.
Multiple teams might be interested in acquiring Wilson, such as the Las Vegas Raiders.
“Wilson’s minimum salary could appeal to teams, provided he waives his no-trade clause,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on Wednesday, October 9. “The Raiders were previously one of the destinations Wilson had listed as preferred.”

If the Steelers choose to move on from Wilson, who is earning just $1.2 million this season and has yet to play a regular-season game, it would signal their commitment to Fields as their starter for the remainder of the season.
However, Fields has his own shortcomings and is in the final year of his rookie contract. If he doesn’t sign an extension with Pittsburgh, he will become an unrestricted free agent in March 2025.
This raises the possibility that Pittsburgh could look for another quarterback before the NFL’s November 5 trade deadline. One potential option is former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in September that the Panthers are more likely to trade Young in the offseason. However, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggested on Wednesday that this could change in the coming weeks.
“A strong offer could alter the Panthers’ plans, and getting ahead in the 2025 quarterback market might be smart for teams needing a long-term solution,” Knox wrote. “Fields is still young enough to be Pittsburgh’s long-term answer, but if his performance declines, Young could be the next former first-round pick the Steelers take a chance on.” Young is currently in the second year of his four-year, $38 million rookie deal, which includes a team option for 2027.
