The Philadelphia Phillies are built to contend for a World Series, but their veteran core won’t be around forever. This summer could bring a major trade to bolster their title hopes.
One player to keep an eye on is third baseman Alec Bohm.
Now 28, Bohm has spent all six of his big-league seasons in Philadelphia and has been a key part of this era of Phillies baseball. Still, a rough start to the 2025 season could make him a trade candidate—especially since he’s on a one-year deal.
While it’s still early, Bohm is hitting just .200 with a .451 OPS and an OPS+ of 30. His defense at third base isn’t a strong point, but his 20 home runs in 2023 and affordable contract could make him appealing to contending teams.
Bohm made his first All-Star appearance in 2024, though that now appears to be more of an exception than a trend. He’s likely still a solid hitter and dependable contributor in his prime, but not a star.
Proposed Trade:
The Phillies trade 3B Alec Bohm to the San Diego Padres for RHP Jeremiah Estrada.
Estrada is a dynamic reliever known for his high-velocity fastball and a unique off-speed pitch called a “chitter,” a hybrid between a Vulcan and circle changeup with nasty downward movement.
The Padres have enough bullpen depth to withstand losing Estrada, and Bohm could offer valuable depth behind stars like Manny Machado and Luis Arráez at the corner infield positions.
In Philadelphia, Edmundo Sosa could take over third base duties. Primarily a shortstop, Sosa is a strong defender and off to a scorching start in 2025—batting .563 with a 1.401 OPS and a 296 OPS+ in limited action.
With closer Jordan Romano struggling, the Phillies would be wise to shore up their bullpen in anticipation of a deep playoff run.
