The Philadelphia Phillies are locked in a close battle with the New York Mets atop the NL East, and they might look to make a major move to bolster their outfield and improve their chances of capturing the division title.
Nick Castellanos has been a steady contributor offensively, and Brandon Marsh is beginning to find his form. Still, both Max Kepler and Johan Rojas appear expendable.
With this year’s trade market potentially favoring sellers, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller floated a bold trade idea that would send Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins to Philadelphia.

Proposed trade:
- Phillies receive: OF Byron Buxton
- Twins receive: RHP Mick Abel (Phillies’ No. 5 prospect) and C Alirio Ferrebus (No. 26 prospect)
Abel, who has already debuted in the majors and shown promise, might be squeezed out of the rotation when Aaron Nola returns from the IL. While parting with Abel would be a gutsy call, the Phillies do have top prospect Andrew Painter waiting in Triple-A as a potential long-term piece in their pitching staff.
Buxton, a former All-Star and Platinum Glove winner, is under contract through 2028 on a seven-year, $100 million deal. He’s putting up impressive numbers this season, hitting .286/.352/.575 with 19 home runs. His bat and glove could provide a significant boost for the Phillies’ playoff push.
Additionally, Buxton could provide long-term outfield stability, especially with Castellanos potentially leaving after 2025.
Though the Twins are still in playoff contention themselves, if they feel their chances are slim, they might be willing to shed Buxton’s contract and add a high-upside arm like Abel to help reshape their rotation for the future. Given Buxton’s injury history, Minnesota may see this as a chance to move on while still gaining value.
