The main storyline throughout Cincinnati Reds camp revolved around how the team would adjust after Spencer Steer suffered a shoulder injury. Steer was expected to play a key role in the starting lineup, primarily at first base while also providing depth in the corner outfield positions.
His injury created ripple effects in both the infield and outfield competitions, making it a relief when he avoided the injured list and secured a spot on the Opening Day roster, defying initial expectations. However, Steer’s inclusion wasn’t the biggest surprise in the final roster decisions.

As recently as this week, the last outfield spot appeared to be a competition between Stuart Fairchild, Blake Dunn, and Jacob Hurtubise. Many projections had Austin Hays, Jake Fraley, and TJ Friedl making the team, with Fairchild as a backup and Gavin Lux in a utility role. In the end, Fairchild was left off the roster, while Dunn and Hurtubise both earned spots on the 26-man squad.
The surprise inclusion of Jacob Hurtubise on the Reds Opening Day roster is a testament to hard work and grit
Dunn’s inclusion isn’t particularly surprising. Once considered one of the Reds’ top prospects by MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, the slugger has dealt with injuries and tends to have a home run-or-bust approach at the plate. However, his strong spring performance—where he lowered his strikeout rate and posted a .412 batting average on balls in play—was a promising sign.

The real surprise is Hurtubise, who could emerge as one of 2025’s most compelling underdog stories. Signed as an undrafted free agent, he offers a unique skill set not found elsewhere on the Reds’ roster. A classic small-ball player, Hurtubise relies on soft contact, hustle, and putting the ball in play—traits that align with the type of player Terry Francona values.

Though he may not have many superstar moments or dramatic curtain calls, his selection sends a clear message. Francona is emphasizing fundamentals, believing that doing the little things right will lead to success. As a West Point graduate admired by his teammates, Hurtubise embodies this mindset. If he can make the most of this opportunity, perhaps the underdog Reds can too.
