Kaapo Kakko of the New York Rangers has been a hot topic in trade discussions, with a recent fan-suggested deal on PuckPedia proposing a swap with the Detroit Red Wings.

In this proposed trade, the Red Wings would receive:
– Kaapo Kakko
– A 2025 fifth-round draft pick
While the Rangers would acquire:
– Andrew Copp
This trade idea, put forward using PuckPedia’s interactive PuckGM tool, would benefit the Red Wings by adding the young Kakko, who is only 23. He could become a valuable addition to Detroit’s young roster, which includes talents like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. Kakko, selected second overall in the 2019 draft, might also find a larger role with the rebuilding Red Wings compared to his current position with the contending Rangers.
For the Rangers, reacquiring Andrew Copp—who they originally obtained from the Winnipeg Jets at the 2022 trade deadline—could be advantageous. Copp, who left for the Red Wings on a five-year, $28.125 million deal, would bring added scoring, size, and physicality to the Rangers’ lineup. Last season, Copp contributed 13 goals and 20 assists in 79 games for Detroit.
Red Wings Expect to Compete for Playoff Spot
Detroit narrowly missed the playoffs last season, but with the addition of key players like Vladimir Tarasenko through free agency, GM Steve Yzerman is optimistic about their chances.
On July 4, Yzerman said, “I believe we’re in the mix with teams that could vie for a playoff spot. If we stay healthy, have strong goaltending, and if some players exceed expectations, we might make it. Alternatively, we could fall just short, missing out by a point on the final game of the season. That’s the fine line we’re dealing with. Comparing this year’s roster to last year’s, there are differences that might improve how well the players fit into their roles.”
Detroit has not reached the playoffs since the 2015-16 season, ending a 25-year streak of postseason appearances from 1990 to 2016.
Kakko Frustrated With Role With Rangers
Kakko was anticipated to be a major contributor to the Rangers’ offense after being selected second overall in the 2019 draft. However, the Finnish forward has struggled with consistency, resulting in occasional scratches during both the regular season and playoffs.
At the season’s end, Kakko expressed his desire to play every game and take on a larger role with the team.
“Playoffs were different,” Kakko said, via NHL.com. “Everyone wants to be on the ice. I wasn’t pleased about not being in the lineup, but I still wanted the team to win. I hoped to get back into the lineup eventually, but I wasn’t happy about it. I think everyone in this room feels the same way; everyone wants to play.”
Kakko played only 61 games, scoring 13 goals and 6 assists for a total of 19 points.
