The Pittsburgh Steelers had a strong 2024 season, finishing with a 10-7 record, securing second place in the AFC North, and making it to the playoffs, where they were eventually eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round.
However, their starting quarterback, Russell Wilson, who posted solid stats by starting 11 games and completing 214-of-336 passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating, is now a free agent.
His return to the team seems increasingly unlikely, especially since he’s visited other teams like the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns.
In an NFL mock draft by 247Sports, Brad Crawford suggests that the Steelers will select Shedeur Sanders from Colorado with the 21st pick as Wilson’s replacement.

Sanders, a four-year college starter, has showcased his ability to put up impressive numbers, throwing for 14,325 yards, 135 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions.
This move could be seen as a steal for the Steelers, as Sanders is widely regarded as one of the top two quarterback prospects in the draft, alongside Miami’s Cam Ward.
He’s coming off an outstanding 2024 season, where he completed 353-of-477 passes for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 168.2 passing efficiency rating.
With Wilson seeking a new team and only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as the other quarterbacks on the roster, it’s highly likely that Sanders would be the Steelers’ starting quarterback for Week 1 in this scenario.
