The New Orleans Saints didn’t make a significant addition to their wide receiver group this offseason, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. The team made an attempt to negotiate with former Saints head coach Sean Payton. When the Broncos announced their plans regarding veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick, the Saints tried to acquire him through a trade. However, the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.
Saints nearly traded for former Broncos WR Tim Patrick
When the Broncos revealed their plans for veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick, the New Orleans Saints attempted to trade for him, but negotiations fell through, as reported by Dave Birkett.
Interesting from new Lions WR Tim Patrick, he said the Broncos told him they were trying to work out a trade with the Saints when they decided to release him after the preseason. The 2 sides couldn't come to terms, and Patrick decided to sign with the Lions practice squad.

Denver eventually released Patrick during roster cuts, getting nothing in return.
Following his release, Patrick signed with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Had he been traded to the Saints beforehand, he likely would have secured a spot on their active roster.
New Orleans needs more wide receiver depth, and Patrick fit the type of player that they wanted to add at the time.
He’s a willing blocker who can make downfield catches and also has experience on special teams.
However, Sean Payton and his front office were clearly uninterested in what the Saints were offering in a deal for Patrick. It’s puzzling, though, because they moved on from him quickly once the deal fell through.
For New Orleans, missing out on Patrick stings more now than it did a week ago.
A.T. Perry, widely regarded as their third-best wide receiver, is now dealing with a hand injury that could sideline him. He is questionable for Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
