The Philadelphia Phillies have made a habit of pursuing under-the-radar moves in recent years, whether through their farm system, the major league roster, or other avenues.
Their latest example came when they added Brewer Hicklen to their 40-man roster. Hicklen, who had been with the Detroit Tigers, showed some encouraging flashes at Triple-A Toledo. Still, at 29 years old, his major league experience remains limited.
To date, Hicklen has appeared in just 10 MLB games, including one earlier this season with Detroit.
Phillies make major roster decision
As the Phillies gear up for the postseason, every roster spot takes on added significance.
CBS Sports reported that the team designated Brewer Hicklen for assignment on Tuesday and filled the vacancy by selecting Rafael Lantigua’s contract.
“The Phillies designated Hicklen for assignment Tuesday.
The Phillies promoted Rafael Lantigua to the active roster to cover for Edmundo Sosa (groin), which required clearing space on the 40-man roster at Hicklen’s expense. The 29-year-old has primarily provided depth at Triple-A this season, posting a .224/.319/.409 slash line over 386 plate appearances,” CBS noted.

More roster adjustments could still be on the horizon.
With October baseball looming, Philadelphia is leaving every option open. The club sees a legitimate shot at a championship, and if things don’t unfold as planned, some difficult calls will have to be made.
