The Minnesota Vikings entered free agency expecting Sam Darnold to sign elsewhere, allowing them to allocate resources to other positions. However, after losing out on Daniel Jones in a bidding war with the Indianapolis Colts, the team has shifted its focus to another veteran quarterback.
Minnesota is seeking a reliable starter to compete with J.J. McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie season due to a meniscus tear in August 2023. While the organization is confident in McCarthy as the potential 2025 starter, they want an experienced backup in place.
Jones was the preferred target due to his familiarity with the Vikings’ coaching staff, but after he committed to Indianapolis, Minnesota turned its attention to the remaining free-agent quarterbacks. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the team is now “seriously discussing the possibility” of signing Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers is reportedly interested in joining an offense featuring Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and former teammate Aaron Jones. If he secured the starting role, he would have the chance to lead one of the NFL’s most dynamic units in 2025.
However, Rodgers would need to relinquish play-calling control to head coach Kevin O’Connell, and the Vikings may still prioritize McCarthy in a quarterback competition if he performs well in offseason workouts.
Minnesota presents an attractive roster and coaching staff compared to other suitors like the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, but New York and Pittsburgh might offer Rodgers a more lucrative deal and a clearer path to a starting role.
If Rodgers chooses another destination, the Vikings will have to consider alternatives such as Drew Lock, Joe Flacco, Jameis Winston, and Carson Wentz—none of whom provide the same upside or stability that Rodgers would bring.
