The Boston Red Sox remain engaged in trade discussions with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, according to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, who reported Tuesday that the two teams have “had recent communications.”
Arenado has been a frequent name in trade rumors throughout the offseason, but the Cardinals have yet to find a team willing to take on the final three years of his contract. He is owed $52 million through 2027, with $21 million due in 2025.
In 2024, Arenado posted a .272 batting average with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs. While it was a down year for him offensively, those numbers still make him a productive player. Defensively, he also experienced some decline but remains one of the more reliable third basemen in the league.
A potential trade package could look like this:
Boston Red Sox receive: 3B Nolan Arenado
St. Louis Cardinals receive: 1B Triston Casas, International Slot Money
The key piece for St. Louis in this scenario would be Triston Casas, a 25-year-old first baseman with four years of team control remaining. Casas hit .241 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 2024, a dip from his 2023 performance, but he still possesses significant upside.
For the Red Sox, trading Casas would help resolve their corner infield logjam and likely prompt Rafael Devers to shift from third base to first—a move that has been considered multiple times.
Acquiring Arenado would bolster Boston’s contention hopes in the highly competitive AL East. The Red Sox have focused much of their offseason on improving their starting rotation, but adding Arenado would solidify their offense while also providing elite defense at third base.
