Alabama addressed a key need on Wednesday afternoon by securing a commitment from West Virginia transfer tight end Jack Sammarco. The 6-foot-6, 240-pounder shared his decision on X, punctuating it with a #RollTide.

Sammarco adds much-needed depth to a tight end group thinned by injuries under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. While he played in all 13 games for the Mountaineers last season, he recorded just one reception for four yards.

Back on April 4, DeBoer emphasized a selective approach to the spring transfer portal: “You’re always looking for someone who fits the identity of your program.

Someone who improves the roster and the team’s overall chemistry and work ethic. We only have a couple scholarships left, so we’re being very intentional about who we bring in.”

Due to a string of injuries, redshirt freshman Jay Lindsay was the only healthy scholarship tight end available throughout spring practices. Others at the position — Josh Cuevas, Danny Lewis Jr., Marshall Pritchett, and transfer Peter Knudson — were sidelined.

Sammarco entered the portal on April 17 and has three years of eligibility left. He is Alabama’s 12th portal addition overall and second at tight end, alongside Knudson. He also marks the Crimson Tide’s first spring portal acquisition, with no departures since the window reopened on April 16.
