Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava has officially exited the program after a conflict over his name, image, and likeness (NIL) earnings. Sources say Iamaleava aimed to double his $2 million annual NIL deal, sparking friction with the university. Following missed practices and a breakdown in communication with the coaching staff, head coach Josh Heupel confirmed his departure, stating that the program’s values come before any individual.

Iamaleava, a redshirt sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining, has initiated the process to enter the spring transfer portal. During his first season as a starter in 2024, he recorded 2,616 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, guiding the Volunteers to a 10-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Soon after entering the portal, Iamaleava committed to UCLA, returning to his home state of California. He joins the Bruins as they begin their first Big Ten season under new head coach Deshaun Foster. At UCLA, Iamaleava will compete for the starting job alongside senior Ethan Garbers and Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar.

Back in Knoxville, Tennessee is moving forward without Iamaleava, preparing for the Orange & White spring game with redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre as quarterback options. Coach Heupel is also exploring transfer options to strengthen the position.
