Trey Hendrickson’s future with the Cincinnati Bengals remains uncertain. The All-Pro defensive end is seeking a new contract and is reportedly prepared to take drastic steps to secure it. Head coach Zac Taylor hopes the situation doesn’t escalate, as indicated by his remarks at the NFL owners’ meetings.

This offseason, the Bengals prioritized keeping their key offensive players around quarterback Joe Burrow, who had put pressure on the franchise to retain its core. As a result, both Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase received significant contract extensions. With that matter settled, attention has now shifted to Hendrickson.

After recording 35 sacks over the past two seasons, Hendrickson is pushing for a new deal. Though the Bengals allowed him to explore trade opportunities, their high asking price deterred potential suitors. With additional salary-cap space available following the Higgins and Chase extensions, discussions with the former third-round pick are ongoing.

Bengals still going through the process with Trey Hendrickson

Taylor spoke highly of Hendrickson, praising his dedication and skill. The head coach emphasized his strong work ethic and talent while noting that they are still navigating the process in hopes of finding a solution that benefits everyone involved.

“He’s been consistently strong, not just for two years, but for four. I believe he’s one of the top pass-rushers in the league. Opposing teams have to plan around him each week. He’s someone who puts in the effort every single day, 365 days a year, which I truly respect and appreciate. We’ll just keep working through the process with him.”

Talk of a trade involving Hendrickson has cooled off. There are rumors suggesting he might be willing to sit out the season if an agreement isn’t reached, but that’s a drastic move aimed at putting pressure on the Bengals’ decision-makers. However, it’s unlikely the situation will escalate that far.

Cincinnati has never been known for spending big, but that’s beginning to change as the salary cap increases and the need to maximize Joe Burrow’s prime becomes more urgent. Letting key players like Hendrickson go is no longer an option. That’s why extending Hendrickson should be their top priority right now.

While having an elite offense is important, the Bengals won’t make another postseason run without their defense pulling its weight. Hendrickson is at the core of any success they have on that side of the ball.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Hendrickson wants to stay, and Taylor shares that sentiment. The business side of things remains the challenge, but it would be surprising if they don’t come to an agreement sooner rather than later.
