The Seattle Seahawks made two significant linebacker signings during the offseason, but two months into the season, neither player remains on the roster.

Seattle announced on Monday that linebacker Tyrel Dodson has been waived, just under three weeks after trading their other offseason linebacker signing, Jerome Baker, to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for linebacker Ernest Jones IV.

Dodson, 26, started all nine games for Seattle this season, tallying 71 tackles, two sacks, three QB hits, five tackles for loss, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. Before joining the Seahawks on a one-year, $4.26 million contract, he spent the first four years of his career with the Buffalo Bills. Dodson, an undrafted player from Texas A&M in 2020, was Pro Football Focus’ top-rated linebacker last season.

Under new head coach Mike Macdonald, Seattle’s defense has occasionally struggled with physicality in their new scheme. Dodson, at 6 feet and 237 pounds, is considered slightly undersized for his position, while Baker didn’t bring the hard-hitting style that Jones has added to the defense.

Rookie Tyrice Knight and second-year undrafted player Drake Thomas are now candidates to step in at linebacker following Dodson’s release.

Additionally, the Seahawks have signed cornerback Josh Jobe from the practice squad to fill Dodson’s roster spot and added tight end N’Keal Harry to the practice squad.

The Seahawks (4-5) are coming off their bye week and will face the San Francisco 49ers (5-4) on the road this Sunday at 1:05 p.m., with pregame coverage starting on Seattle Sports radio at 10 a.m.
