The Seattle Mariners have bolstered their roster by claiming catcher off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

He was designated for assignment by Toronto on December 13. Though he has not yet appeared in a Major League game, he briefly joined the St. Louis Cardinals’ active roster in June as a backup. Toronto acquired him after the Cardinals designated him for assignment earlier in the month.

Last season, He played for the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis) and Buffalo Bisons (Toronto), hitting .206 with eight home runs, 33 RBIs, and a .620 OPS. Over four minor league seasons, he has played 219 games with a .241 batting average, 29 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs, and 92 RBIs.

Nick Raposo claimed off waivers by Mariners

Raposo was signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Wheaton College in 2020.

His addition provides the Mariners with an extra catcher option. With Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver as the team’s primary catchers, Garver will be looking to improve after a challenging first season in Seattle. Seby Zavala, who struggled offensively and defensively in his short stint as a third catcher, was released after just 18 games. Raposo could see opportunities to contribute as a backup option for the Mariners this season.
