The Seattle Seahawks need to make several moves to comply with the salary cap before the new league year begins, and they’ve already started taking action.
According to OverTheCap, the team has restructured defensive lineman Leonard Williams’ contract, creating over $14 million in cap space. The Seahawks converted $18.745 million of Williams’ salary into a bonus and added two void years to his deal, lowering his 2025 cap hit from $29.1 million to $14.06 million.
However, this adjustment raises Williams’ 2026 cap hit to $29.6 million and would result in $9.372 million in dead money in 2027 if his contract voids without an extension. The 30-year-old is coming off a career-best season, justifying the Seahawks’ decision to sign him to a $64.5 million contract last offseason after acquiring him from the New York Giants in a midseason trade.
Before the restructure, Williams had the fourth-highest cap hit on the team, trailing only Geno Smith, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett. His new cap number now places him sixth, also behind Noah Fant and Uchenna Nwosu.
Coming off a team-leading 11-sack season, ‘Big Cat’ remains a crucial part of Seattle’s defense and will be a key player in Mike Macdonald’s system for 2025. While this move helps, the Seahawks are still approximately $14 million over the salary cap, meaning more adjustments are necessary. However, cutting the deficit in half without releasing anyone is a solid first step.
