This might impact the Giants’ chances of getting him.

The SF Giants’ free agent target, is mainly a shortstop, but reports indicate that he is willing to switch to third base or second base to expand his opportunities and join a competitive team.

This could pose a challenge for the Giants. If He were firmly committed to playing shortstop, the Giants would likely be a more attractive option for him, as they would guarantee him that position if they signed him.

SF Giants free agent target Willy Adames considering position change

His openness to playing other positions on the diamond has broadened his potential suitors, as teams that may not need a shortstop but could use an upgrade at third or second base could now be interested. The New York Mets, for example, already have Francisco Lindor at shortstop but might have openings at other infield spots.

Adames had a rough defensive season in 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers, committing 20 errors and posting a .963 fielding percentage. Advanced metrics placed him around the middle defensively at shortstop, a decline from his previous reputation as a strong defender.

While his willingness to consider a position change opens up options, it doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t still sign with the Giants. Being open to a different position doesn’t mean he prefers it; players who have been shortstops throughout their careers take pride in handling one of the most demanding positions on the field. Changing positions could be a blow to his sense of pride.

On top of this, the Giants face competition from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are also rumored to be interested in Adames. Given their financial power, the Giants may struggle to outbid them. Ultimately, the more teams pursuing Adames, the harder it will be for the Giants to land him. However, the opportunity to be their long-term shortstop could be a compelling reason for him to choose San Francisco.
