The Padres made several roster moves this week, including signing utility player to a one-year contract with a club option for 2026 and releasing four players ahead of the Friday non-tender deadline. Those released included reliever Logan Gillaspie, outfielder Bryce Johnson, infielder Mason McCoy, and right-hander Luis Patiño, who missed the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Patiño, once a highly regarded prospect in the Padres’ system, returned to the organization last December on a waiver claim and could potentially continue his comeback with San Diego on a minor league deal.
At 25, Patiño has a career 5.02 ERA over 136⅓ innings and was projected to earn $800,000 in arbitration before being non-tendered. The other three players—Gillaspie, Johnson, and McCoy—played minor roles for the team in 2024, with each having been recent additions to the organization.

In addition to Wade’s signing, the Padres protected pitching prospects Henry Baez, Ryan Bergert, and Omar Cruz from the Rule 5 draft, leaving the 40-man roster at 33 as the winter meetings approach. Wade, who was arbitration-eligible, will earn $900,000 in 2025.
His first season in San Diego saw him hit .217/.285/.239, but his versatility, speed, and ability to deliver timely hits earned him a spot for 2025. Wade played six defensive positions, was 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts, and became a clubhouse favorite, providing valuable depth off the bench.
