Los Angeles Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz stifled the Reds’ lineup on Sunday, keeping Cincinnati’s bats quiet from the start. The Reds struggled against both the Angels’ bullpen and Kochanowicz, failing to generate much offense. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, they were never able to recover, ultimately falling 4-1.
The Highlights
The Angels wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Taylor Ward led off the bottom of the first with a double and came around to score when Logan O’Hoppe followed with one of his own. However, Graham Ashcraft quickly settled in, allowing just one more hit over four innings of one-run ball while striking out five and walking one.

Meanwhile, the Reds’ offense struggled early. Jack Kochanowicz was dominant, tossing four perfect innings before handing things over to Kenley Jansen.
Cincinnati finally got some baserunners in the fifth when Tyler Stephenson worked a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by Sal Stewart. However, they failed to capitalize, as a bunt attempt couldn’t bring in the run, and a groundout ended the inning.
Reds closer Alexis Díaz made his 2025 spring training debut in the bottom of the fifth, working around a walk and a single to escape unscathed, including getting Mike Trout to tap out in front of the plate.

However, Scott Barlow ran into trouble in the sixth, surrendering a solo homer to Yoan Moncada and a sacrifice fly to Scott Kingery, giving the Angels a 3-0 lead. Los Angeles tacked on another run in the seventh after a walk by Albert Abreu led to a pair of singles, extending the lead to 4-0.
Cincinnati finally broke through in the ninth when Noelvi Marte led off with a triple and Rece Hinds followed with a walk.
Austin Wynns drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Francisco Urbaez then singled to put runners on the corners, but a ground-ball double play ended the game, sealing the Angels’ victory.

Game Notes
Sal Stewart had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, while Edwin Rios also doubled in his lone at-bat. Noelvi Marte’s triple added to Cincinnati’s extra-base tally, giving them three on the day. However, outside of those, the Reds’ offense was mostly quiet, managing just one other hit—a single by Francisco Urbaez in the ninth inning.
On the mound, Graham Ashcraft showed progress, completing four innings for the first time this spring. After failing to go three full innings in his previous three starts, he was both efficient and effective on Sunday, limiting the Angels to one run while striking out five.
