The Cincinnati Reds designated Him for assignment over the weekend to clear space for a couple of roster additions. However, the Reds couldn’t sneak him through waivers—he was claimed by the Seattle Mariners and is now headed to the Pacific Northwest.

A West Point graduate, He was one of the standout stories of spring training. He earned praise for his speed, defensive abilities, and sharp eye at the plate, along with a reputation as a selfless, team-oriented player. His journey to the majors was seen as genuinely inspirational.

Reds outfielder Hurtubise makes MLB history against Dodgers

But in the big leagues, a great story alone isn’t enough. While Hurtubise impressed in camp and initially made the Opening Day roster, his impact faded quickly once the 2025 season began.

Reds lose outfielder Jacob Hurtubise to the Mariners

Jacob Hurtubise’s time with the Reds was short-lived. After Austin Hays returned from the injured list, Hurtubise became expendable.

Cincinnati optioned the 26-year-old back to the minors, and aside from his strong on-base percentage, his performance was underwhelming—he was slashing just .144/.336/.186 at the time he was designated for assignment last week.

Mariners Claim Jacob Hurtubise - MLB Trade Rumors

Now, Hurtubise will get a fresh start with a familiar Reds trade partner—the Seattle Mariners. The two teams have a history of exchanging players, including the 2022 deal that sent Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker to Seattle in return for Jake Fraley, Justin Dunn, Brandon Williamson, and Connor Phillips.

Later that year, the Reds sent Luis Castillo to the Mariners in a blockbuster trade that brought Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo to Cincinnati.

Hurtubise still has minor-league options, so he’s expected to begin his Mariners tenure at Triple-A Tacoma. Given Seattle’s offensive struggles, it’s a bit surprising they’d take a chance on a light-hitting outfielder. However, Hurtubise’s speed and defensive skills might prove valuable at T-Mobile Park later this season. Reds fans will surely be rooting for him in his new chapter.
