His tenure with the Red Sox has officially come to a close.
On Tuesday, the team announced that they had traded the former Middleborough High star to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations. Earlier this week, He had been designated for assignment, which opened the door for other teams to claim or acquire him before Boston could attempt to send him outright to Triple-A.
Considering his recent performance, it was unlikely He would remain with the organization.
Despite that, the veteran lefty had been one of Boston’s bright spots this season. After joining the club as a non-roster invitee, he impressed enough to make the Opening Day roster and contributed as both a depth starter and long reliever. In 12 games (including five starts), Newcomb posted a 3.95 ERA over 41 innings — his highest workload since 2019.

He was instrumental during a stretch when the Red Sox were dealing with significant injuries in their starting rotation, notably Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito. More recently, Newcomb provided valuable innings during lopsided games to ease the burden on a heavily taxed bullpen.
This move marks Newcomb’s second stint with the Athletics, having previously pitched for them during the 2023–24 seasons. Now 31, he has played nine years in the majors, with previous stops including the Braves, Cubs, and Giants.
