The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a challenging offseason with several key veterans on expiring contracts, making it unrealistic to keep everyone.

Kyle Schwarber is expected to be the main priority for retention, while others could be on their way out. According to Fansided’s Robert Murray, All-Star pitcher Ranger Suárez is likely to secure a major payday in free agency, which could push the Phillies to let him walk.

“Philadelphia has some very tough calls ahead, with Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, and Suárez all nearing free agency. They can’t keep them all. The expectation is that Schwarber takes priority and that at least two of those three get qualifying offers. But that won’t cool Suárez’s market.

Pitching demand has been sky-high in recent years, and Suárez is well-positioned to land a huge contract,” Murray noted.

Phillies History: Trade for J.T. Realmuto in 2019 turned into the ultimate heist

Suárez has put together an excellent season, posting a 2.84 ERA, a 12–6 record, a 1.168 WHIP, and 145 strikeouts across 149 innings. His performance makes him one of the most appealing left-handed starters available, and Murray is right that plenty of teams will be chasing him.

With this being the final year of his contract and no club or player options in play, the only way for the Phillies to keep him is by working out a new deal or extending a qualifying offer. Ideally, they find a way to make it happen—Suárez remains one of the true bright spots of Philadelphia’s rotation.
