The Philadelphia Phillies are focused on Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto this offseason, but they have other players entering free agency as well.
While the top MLB free agents won’t hit the market until after the World Series, players who finish the year off their teams’ 40-man rosters and meet certain criteria can become free agents earlier. One such player is Devin Sweet, who was removed from the Phillies’ 40-man roster in August.

Sweet, who previously made seven major league appearances with the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics two seasons ago, spent most of this year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was designated for assignment at the trade deadline but went unclaimed on waivers.
According to his MLB.com transaction page, Sweet elected free agency on Friday. He’ll likely look for a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Sweet’s Triple-A campaign was serviceable but unspectacular — he logged innings, posting a 5.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 46 appearances, with 49 strikeouts, 47 hits, and 27 walks.
Originally signed by the Mariners as an undrafted free agent, Sweet has also spent time in the Giants and Tigers organizations. Now 29, he’s still searching for a consistent opportunity in the majors after seven seasons in the minors — hoping next year might finally be the one.
