The Philadelphia Phillies have emerged with the best record in Major League Baseball through the first third of the season, continuing their strong run as one of the league’s top teams.

However, despite a dominant regular season last year, the Phillies managed only one postseason win before being knocked out by the New York Mets—a reminder of how difficult it is to carry regular season momentum into October success.

In light of that setback, the Phillies could be eyeing trade deadline moves to bolster their already strong roster. Jim Riley of BALLCAP Sports expects them to add some power to the outfield.

Anticipating a tough road through the playoffs, Riley suggested the Phillies could target slugging outfielder Cedric Mullins in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

“October will be a grind,” Riley said. “Getting through the National League playoffs is going to be brutal. You need strength across the board. I like the idea of Philly going after Mullins.”

While Mullins could also appeal to contenders like the Dodgers or Guardians, Riley pointed out that Philadelphia is a particularly good fit given their struggles getting offense from center fielders Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas.

Mullins has hit .226/.320/.446 with 10 home runs this season and could add needed power to the bottom half of the Phillies’ lineup. His contract situation could also make him a cost-effective addition—he’s slated for free agency after the season and projected for a $56 million deal, making it likely the Orioles would be willing to move him for a modest return.

If the Phillies hope to turn their regular season dominance into a World Series title, this kind of move could be crucial.
