As the New York Rangers work through salary cap issues this offseason, could an unexpected defenseman become a potential trade candidate?
As the New York Rangers prepare to rework their roster this offseason, indications suggest a trade involving defenseman could be on the horizon. His $8 million cap hit would free up much-needed financial space, especially after previous efforts to move him last offseason didn’t materialize.
However, while trading Him may seem like the logical choice to clear room for contracts with players like Igor Shesterkin and K’Andre Miller, The Athletic’s Arthur Staple proposes a different scenario—a surprise trade could be in the works.
Staple points to K’Andre Miller as a possible “wild card” in trade talks. Despite his age (24) and strong potential, questions have emerged about his fit alongside Adam Fox. Staple notes:
“Miller may be better suited with a more stay-at-home partner, which would place him as a second-pair defenseman for the Rangers. If the team isn’t entirely convinced about the Miller-Fox pairing, then a trade might be a smart move this offseason.”

The two defensemen showed early promise together, but a recent split during a challenging game signals that the coaching staff might have reservations. Additionally, trading Miller could ease future cap concerns, giving the Rangers greater financial flexibility.
Miller Gets the Rangers More in Trade Than Trouba Does
Staple suggests that trading K’Andre Miller could bring a strong return, potentially a young, cost-effective defenseman or several players with lower salary cap implications.

With the rise of Victor Mancini and Braden Schneider’s reliable performance, the Rangers might manage Miller’s departure without feeling his absence too heavily.
K’Andre Miller of the Rangers might unexpectedly become part of trade discussions. For GM Chris Drury, this decision isn’t easy—he has to determine where the money goes, maximize the return, and decide which player the organization can afford to lose. It’s clear that a move is likely, but the question remains: who will it be?
