As the New York Rangers approach the trade deadline, they must make tough choices based on roster needs and overall value. While there will be multiple trade opportunities, one of the most intriguing could come from the NHL’s newest market.
The Utah Hockey Club is dealing with an ongoing situation involving Finnish forward Matias Maccelli—a lesser-known name, but one who could provide valuable depth for the Rangers.
At just 24 years old, Maccelli was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. The Turku, Finland native emerged as a top playmaker in Arizona before the team’s move to Utah. In his first full NHL season, he tallied 49 points in 64 games, followed by 57 points in 82 games.

However, his transition to Utah has been rocky, with just eight goals and ten assists (18 points) in 52 games this season. He has even been a healthy scratch, and according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, his situation is worth monitoring in the coming weeks.
Despite his struggles, Maccelli has shown he can thrive in the right environment. His playmaking ability could help spark the Rangers’ offense, especially if paired with a shooter like Arthur Kaliyev.
However, given his previous adjustment period in Arizona, patience would be necessary from both the coaching staff and fans. The question remains—can the Rangers afford to take that risk at this stage of the season?
