The New York Mets may not be finished making headline-grabbing moves after their historic deal for Juan Soto. Owner Steve Cohen and the Mets’ front office are now focusing on strengthening their rotation, exploring the market for elite pitching options. Reports suggest they’ve set their sights on a World Series-winning starting pitcher as their next free-agent target.
Mets reportedly interested in adding Dodgers’ Walker Buehler
Andy Martino of SNY recently joined The Michael Kay Show and shared some intriguing insight about the Mets’ potential free-agent plans. He mentioned that it’s “definitely possible” the Mets could target Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler on a one-year deal (via The Amazin’ Citi on X).

Buehler could be had for a discount coming off a down year
The 2023-24 season wasn’t Buehler’s strongest, which explains why New York is considering offering him only a one-year deal. During the regular season with the Dodgers, he recorded a -1.3 WAR, a 1-6 record, and a 5.38 ERA. This off year might make him available at a significant discount. Buehler could secure a contract in the ballpark of three years and $54 million, averaging $18 million annually.
Buehler turned on the heat in the postseason
Despite a lackluster regular season, Buehler stepped up when the Dodgers needed him the most. He threw 15 innings in the postseason, posting a 20.6 K% and a .214 batting average against. As a former Cy Young finalist (2019 and 2021), Buehler may still have some quality innings left in him.
Buehler has shown he thrives in clutch situations, holding his ground against top-tier players like Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in crucial moments. He contributed an 11.3% championship win probability added against the Yankees in the World Series — the highest of his postseason career. Buehler played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ title run and could bring that same impact to the Mets’ rotation.
Signing Buehler would help the Mets’ chances of winning the World Series
Buehler is known for his strong postseason performances. The Mets’ offseason focus has been on acquiring key players who can make an impact when October arrives. Buehler played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ most recent championship run, and he could have a similar influence if he joins the Mets in Queens.
